Best SEO Plugins for WordPress in 2026: 5 Tested and Compared
We installed five WordPress SEO plugins on a clean site and measured what each adds to a page. Results, real prices and which one to choose.
Every WordPress SEO plugin does the same basic job: it writes the title, description, canonical and schema tags that search engines read, builds an XML sitemap, and tells you when a page is missing something. They differ in how much they do without being asked, how heavy they are, and what they charge for the rest.
We installed the five most used ones on a clean test site and looked at what each actually puts on a page. That test, and each developer’s own pricing page, is what this list is built on.

Quick picks
- Best overall: Rank Math. The most features in the free version, and the cheapest paid plan for more than one site.
- Best for beginners who want guidance: Yoast SEO. The largest user base and the clearest writing checks.
- Best if you want it done for you: Slim SEO. Almost no settings, and by far the lightest.
- Best for agencies: SEOPress. One price for unlimited sites, white label, and it renews at the same price.
- Best for WooCommerce stores on one site: All in One SEO. WooCommerce SEO is included from its lowest plan.
What each plugin does out of the box
How we tested. On 2 October 2026 we installed the free version of each plugin, one at a time, on a clean WordPress site with WooCommerce and the default theme. We left every setting at its default, published one ordinary blog post, and looked at what each plugin put into the page. The figures are for that one site and that one post. They show how the plugins behave out of the box. They are not a ranking test: no plugin can be shown to rank a page higher than another from a test like this, and we do not claim it.
| Plugin (free version) | Version tested | Size on disk | Database tables added | Added to the page head | Meta description written for you | Scripts or styles added to the page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slim SEO | 4.11.0 | 1.7 MB | 0 | 1.1 KB | Yes | None |
| SEOPress | 10.3 | 13.2 MB | 1 | 1.7 KB | Yes | None |
| Rank Math | 1.0.279 | 16.1 MB | 2 | 3.3 KB | Yes | None |
| Yoast SEO | 28.6 | 22.4 MB | 6 | 4.5 KB | No | None |
| All in One SEO | 5.0.2.1 | 25.1 MB | 9 | 4.8 KB | Yes | None |
Four things stood out.
- None of them slows the page with scripts. All five add only text to the page head. Not one added a script or stylesheet to the public page.
- Yoast does not write a meta description for you. The other four generated one from the post. With Yoast the tag is absent until you type one, and Google then picks its own snippet.
- Rank Math does nothing until you pass its account screen. After activation it showed only a “Connect FREE Account” page, and it printed no SEO tags at all until we pressed “Skip Step”. You can skip it, but you have to find the button.
- Size varies fifteen-fold. Slim SEO is 1.7 MB on disk and creates no database tables. All in One SEO is 25.1 MB and creates nine.
1. Rank Math
Rank Math gives away what others sell. Its free version has a redirect manager, lets you optimise a post for several focus keywords, and has modules for WooCommerce, local SEO and schema that you switch on only if you need them. On WordPress.org it has more than 4 million active installations and a 4.8 out of 5 rating from 7,508 ratings.
In our test it produced the fullest default output of the “big three”: a meta description, six Open Graph tags, five Twitter tags, and schema for the organisation, site, page, author and article.
Price from the developer: Rank Math PRO is $8.99 a month billed annually, which is $107.88 a year, for unlimited sites that you own. At the time we checked, the first year was discounted to $7.99 a month. Business is $27.99 a month for 100 client sites, Agency $64.99 a month for 500. There is a 30-day refund.

The catch: the account screen described above, and a settings area large enough to get lost in.

2. Yoast SEO
Yoast is the plugin most people have heard of: more than 10 million active installations, 4.8 out of 5 from 27,820 ratings. Its strength is the writing guidance. The traffic-light checks for readability and keyword use are the easiest of any plugin to follow, and that is why editors and clients like it.
The free version is deliberately limited. One focus keyword per post, no redirect manager, and, as our test showed, no automatic meta description.
Price from the developer: Yoast SEO Premium is $118.80 a year for one site, before VAT. Since July 2025 that one plan includes what used to be separate Local, Video and News add-ons. Yoast WooCommerce SEO is $178.80 a year and includes everything in Premium.

The catch: it is priced per site, so five sites cost five times as much.

3. All in One SEO
All in One SEO (AIOSEO) is the oldest of the group and now the most packed. WordPress.org shows more than 2 million active installations and 4.7 out of 5 from 5,218 ratings. Its paid plans put WooCommerce SEO, schema, redirects and breadcrumbs in the lowest tier, where rivals keep some of those for higher ones.
It was also the heaviest in our test: 25.1 MB on disk, nine database tables, and the most markup added to the page.
Price from the developer: Basic is $49.50 for the first year on one site and renews at $99. Plus is $99.50 then $199 for three sites, Pro $199.50 then $399 for ten, Elite $299.50 then $599 for a hundred. The refund window is 14 days.

The catch: the renewal is double the first-year price, and the developer says so on its pricing page.

4. SEOPress
SEOPress is the quiet one: more than 300,000 active installations and 4.8 out of 5 from 1,261 ratings. It shows no ads in the dashboard, supports white labelling, and its pricing is the simplest here.
In our test the free version wrote a meta description and social tags but no schema. Schema is part of SEOPress PRO.
Price from the developer: SEOPress PRO is $49 a year for one site, $59 for five and $149 for unlimited sites. The pricing page states that it renews at the same price every year, which none of the others here promise.

The catch: a smaller community, so fewer tutorials when you get stuck.

5. Slim SEO
Slim SEO takes the opposite approach to all of the above: it has almost no settings. Install it and it writes titles, descriptions, social tags, schema and a sitemap by itself. It has more than 70,000 active installations and 4.7 out of 5 from 136 ratings.
It was the lightest in our test by a wide margin, 1.7 MB and no database tables, and it still produced the richest schema of the five.

The catch: if you want to control details post by post, there is less to control. The paid Slim SEO Pro adds a visual schema builder and an internal link manager.

Also worth knowing: The SEO Framework
The SEO Framework has more than 200,000 active installations and the highest rating of all, 4.9 out of 5 from 379 ratings. It is fast and ad-free. One caution: when we checked, its last update on WordPress.org was in December 2025 and it had not been marked as tested with the current WordPress version.

Other WordPress SEO tools that pair with these
An SEO plugin handles tags and sitemaps. Three other tools cover what it does not.
- Internal links: Link Whisper Pro suggests links between your posts as you write.
- Extra schema: Schema Pro adds schema types site-wide. See our Schema Pro review.
- Measurement: Google Search Console is free and shows which searches your pages appear for. No plugin replaces it.
Is there an automatic SEO plugin for WordPress?
Partly. Slim SEO is the closest: it fills in titles, descriptions and schema with no input. Rank Math, All in One SEO and SEOPress also generate a description from your content. What no plugin can automate is the part that decides rankings: whether the page answers the search better than the pages above it.
How to choose
- One site, want guidance while writing: Yoast.
- Several sites of your own: Rank Math.
- Client sites, want predictable cost: SEOPress.
- A store on one site: All in One SEO, or see best SEO plugin for WooCommerce.
- You do not want to think about it: Slim SEO.
Run only one. Two SEO plugins on the same site print duplicate tags.
What a GPL copy does and does not include
The Pro plugins named here are licensed under the GPL, which is why we can distribute them. A copy from PureGPL is the developer’s original file. It is not a licence with the developer, so you do not get their support, and anything that runs through the developer’s own account or servers is not part of it. In SEO plugins that matters more than usual: keyword rank tracking, AI writing credits and connected analytics are services the developer hosts, and they need the developer’s account. The on-site features (schema, redirects, sitemaps, WooCommerce and local SEO settings) are in the file. Updates come from us. If you need the hosted services or the developer’s support, buy from the developer.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best SEO plugin for WordPress?
For most sites, Rank Math: it has the most in its free version and the lowest paid price for more than one site. Yoast is the better choice if clear writing guidance matters most.
Do I need an SEO plugin at all?
WordPress alone prints a title and a canonical tag and has a basic sitemap. It does not write meta descriptions, social tags or schema. In our test the bare site had none of the three.
Do SEO plugins slow down a site?
Not on the public page, in our test. None of the five added a script or stylesheet. They add between 1.1 KB and 4.8 KB of text to the page head.
Can I switch SEO plugins later?
Yes. Rank Math, All in One SEO and SEOPress each have an importer for the others’ settings. Deactivate the old plugin once the import is done.
Will an SEO plugin get me to the top of Google?
No. It makes sure search engines can read your pages correctly. Ranking depends on the content and on who links to it.
