Best Free SEO Plugins for WordPress in 2026, Tested

Five free WordPress SEO plugins tested with default settings: what each gives you for nothing, and what the paid versions add.

Best Free SEO Plugins for WordPress in 2026, Tested

You do not have to pay for an SEO plugin. The free versions of all the main ones write the tags search engines read and build a sitemap. The real question is which free version holds back the least, and what you would actually gain by paying.

We installed five free SEO plugins on a clean site and recorded what each did with no settings changed.

Test results for five WordPress SEO plugins: size on disk, database tables, bytes added to the page head, and whether a meta description is written
What each plugin did out of the box. Free versions, default settings, on a clean test site, 2 October 2026.

The short answer

  • Most generous free version: Rank Math.
  • Lightest, with nothing to configure: Slim SEO.
  • Most widely used: Yoast SEO.
  • No ads or upsells in the dashboard: SEOPress.

The five free plugins, tested

How we tested. On 2 October 2026 we installed the free version of each plugin, one at a time, on a clean WordPress site with WooCommerce and the default theme. We left every setting at its default, published one ordinary blog post, and looked at what each plugin put into the page. The figures are for that one site and that one post. They show how the plugins behave out of the box. They are not a ranking test: no plugin can be shown to rank a page higher than another from a test like this, and we do not claim it.

Plugin (free version) Version tested Size on disk Database tables added Added to the page head Meta description written for you Scripts or styles added to the page
Slim SEO 4.11.0 1.7 MB 0 1.1 KB Yes None
SEOPress 10.3 13.2 MB 1 1.7 KB Yes None
Rank Math 1.0.279 16.1 MB 2 3.3 KB Yes None
Yoast SEO 28.6 22.4 MB 6 4.5 KB No None
All in One SEO 5.0.2.1 25.1 MB 9 4.8 KB Yes None

What each free version gave us

Rank Math (free)

More than 4 million active installations, rated 4.8 from 7,508 ratings. With defaults it wrote a meta description, six Open Graph tags, five Twitter tags and schema for the organisation, site, page, author and article. The free version also has a redirect manager and accepts several focus keywords per post.

One thing to expect: after activation it shows a “Connect FREE Account” screen and prints nothing on your site until you connect or press “Skip Step”.

Yoast SEO (free)

More than 10 million active installations, rated 4.8 from 27,820 ratings. It printed social tags and article, page, breadcrumb and site schema. It did not print a meta description: you write those yourself, one post at a time. One focus keyword per post, and no redirect manager.

All in One SEO (free)

More than 2 million active installations, rated 4.7 from 5,218 ratings. It wrote a description, social tags and schema including breadcrumbs. It was the largest install in our test at 25.1 MB with nine database tables.

SEOPress (free)

More than 300,000 active installations, rated 4.8 from 1,261 ratings. It wrote a description and social tags. It printed no schema: structured data is in SEOPress PRO.

Slim SEO (free)

More than 70,000 active installations, rated 4.7 from 136 ratings. With no setup at all it wrote a description, social tags and the widest set of schema types of the five. It is 1.7 MB and created no database tables.

What you get by paying

Plugin What the paid version adds, per the developer Developer’s price
Rank Math PRO Schema generator, rank tracker for 500 keywords, WooCommerce SEO PRO, multi-location local SEO, News and Video sitemaps $107.88 a year, unlimited own sites
Yoast SEO Premium Redirect manager, internal linking suggestions, AI titles and descriptions, Local, Video and News SEO $118.80 a year, 1 site
All in One SEO Schema, WooCommerce SEO, redirects, breadcrumbs, extra keywords $49.50 first year, then $99, 1 site
SEOPress PRO Schema, WooCommerce and local SEO, redirects and 404 monitoring, white label $49 a year, 1 site
Slim SEO Pro Visual schema builder, internal link manager See the developer’s site

Do you need the paid version?

Probably not if you run a blog or a small business site and are willing to write your own descriptions. The free version of Rank Math or Slim SEO covers it.

Probably yes if any of these apply:

  • You change or delete pages often and need redirects (Yoast and All in One SEO keep these for paid plans).
  • You run a store and want product-specific handling.
  • You need schema beyond articles, such as FAQs, recipes, events or local business details.
  • You have a physical location and want local SEO.

A third option: the Pro files under the GPL

The Pro versions are licensed under the GPL, so the files can be redistributed. PureGPL sells them as single downloads:

Read the next section before choosing this route. It suits someone who wants the on-site features and does not need the developer’s hosted services or support.

What a GPL copy does and does not include

The Pro plugins named here are licensed under the GPL, which is why we can distribute them. A copy from PureGPL is the developer’s original file. It is not a licence with the developer, so you do not get their support, and anything that runs through the developer’s own account or servers is not part of it. In SEO plugins that matters more than usual: keyword rank tracking, AI writing credits and connected analytics are services the developer hosts, and they need the developer’s account. The on-site features (schema, redirects, sitemaps, WooCommerce and local SEO settings) are in the file. Updates come from us. If you need the hosted services or the developer’s support, buy from the developer.
