Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Tested Side by Side in 2026

Rank Math and Yoast SEO are the two plugins most WordPress sites choose between. They do the same core job. The differences are in what the free version holds back, what the paid version costs once you have more than one site, and how each behaves on the day you install it.

We installed both on the same clean site and compared the output. Prices are from each developer’s own pricing page, read on 2 October 2026.

The short answer

  • Choose Rank Math if you have more than one site, want redirects and several focus keywords without paying, or run WooCommerce.
  • Choose Yoast if you want the clearest writing guidance, hand the site to editors or clients, or prefer the plugin with the longest track record.

What each did on our test site

How we tested. On 2 October 2026 we installed the free version of each plugin, one at a time, on a clean WordPress site with WooCommerce and the default theme. We left every setting at its default, published one ordinary blog post, and looked at what each plugin put into the page. The figures are for that one site and that one post. They show how the plugins behave out of the box. They are not a ranking test: no plugin can be shown to rank a page higher than another from a test like this, and we do not claim it.

On a plain blog post, default settings Rank Math 1.0.279 Yoast SEO 28.6
Meta description Written automatically Not printed until you write one
Open Graph tags 6 6
Twitter tags 5 1
Schema types Organization, WebSite, WebPage, Person, BlogPosting Article, WebPage, BreadcrumbList, WebSite
Added to the page head 3.3 KB 4.5 KB
Scripts or styles on the public page None None
Size on disk 16.1 MB 22.4 MB
Database tables created 2 6
Sitemap address /sitemap_index.xml /sitemap_index.xml

Two results matter in practice.

Yoast left the meta description empty. That is by design: Yoast wants you to write it. But on a site with hundreds of old posts, it means hundreds of pages with no description until someone fills them in. Rank Math generated one from the content.

Rank Math did nothing at first. After activation its only screen was “Connect FREE Account”, and it printed no tags on the site until we pressed “Skip Step” and went through the setup wizard. Yoast worked from the moment it was switched on. If you install Rank Math and see no change, this is why.

Free versions

This is where Rank Math wins most clearly. Its free version includes a redirect manager, several focus keywords per post, and modules for WooCommerce and local SEO. Yoast’s own Premium page lists the redirect manager and internal linking suggestions as Premium features.

What Yoast’s free version does better is explain. Its readability and SEO checks are short, plain sentences with a red, orange or green mark. For someone who writes and does not want to learn SEO, that is worth a lot.

Rank Math PRO

$8.99 a month billed annually, $107.88 a year, on unlimited sites that you own. The PRO feature list on its pricing page includes a schema generator, a keyword rank tracker for 500 keywords, WooCommerce SEO, local SEO for multiple locations, and Google News and Video sitemaps. Client sites need the Business plan at $27.99 a month.

Yoast SEO Premium

$118.80 a year for one site, before VAT. Since July 2025 it includes the former Local, Video and News add-ons. Yoast lists real-time Premium content analysis, unlimited use of its AI features, the redirect manager and the internal linking tool. Extra seats for its Google Docs add-on cost $5 a month each.

The cost of five sites

Rank Math PRO Yoast SEO Premium
1 site, per year $107.88 $118.80
5 of your own sites, per year $107.88 $594.00

Yoast offers bulk discounts and custom pricing for agencies, so the real figure for five sites may be lower than list price. On one site the two cost about the same.

Ease of use

Yoast has fewer settings and a calmer interface. Rank Math has more of everything, arranged in modules you can switch off. Neither needs code. A beginner will be comfortable in Yoast sooner; someone who likes control will prefer Rank Math.

Switching between them

Rank Math’s setup wizard has an import step that reads Yoast’s settings, titles and descriptions. Take a backup, run the import, check a few pages, then deactivate Yoast. Never leave both active: you would get two sets of tags on every page.

Both on PureGPL

What a GPL copy does and does not include

The Pro plugins named here are licensed under the GPL, which is why we can distribute them. A copy from PureGPL is the developer’s original file. It is not a licence with the developer, so you do not get their support, and anything that runs through the developer’s own account or servers is not part of it. In SEO plugins that matters more than usual: keyword rank tracking, AI writing credits and connected analytics are services the developer hosts, and they need the developer’s account. The on-site features (schema, redirects, sitemaps, WooCommerce and local SEO settings) are in the file. Updates come from us. If you need the hosted services or the developer’s support, buy from the developer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rank Math better than Yoast?

For features per dollar, yes. For writing guidance and a simpler interface, Yoast is better. Neither will rank a page higher than the other by itself.

Is Rank Math free?

Yes, there is a free version on WordPress.org. It asks you to connect a free account after activation; you can skip that step.

Does Yoast write meta descriptions automatically?

Not in our test of the free version. The tag was absent until one was written. Yoast SEO Premium includes AI features that can generate titles and descriptions.

Can I use Rank Math and Yoast together?

No. Use one. Two SEO plugins print duplicate tags and conflicting sitemaps.

Which is lighter?

On our test site Rank Math: 16.1 MB against 22.4 MB on disk, and 3.3 KB against 4.5 KB added to the page. Neither added scripts to the public page.
