When you first install it, the plugin installs nothing by itself. It only shows you what is available. You turn the automatic part on later, if you want it, and only for the plugins you choose.

Install it
Exactly like any other WordPress plugin. It takes about a minute.
How to install the plugin
Download the fileGet puregpl-connect.zip from your PureGPL account.

3Getting started
Connect your site
Your site needs to tell PureGPL who it belongs to. You do this once, by pasting in a token. A token is just a long password that says "this website is mine".

4Getting started
Turn on crash protection
This is the safety net. It is a small file that notices if your website stops loading, and puts the last plugin back.
Right after connecting, the plugin asks you to switch it on. There is one button, and it says Turn it on. Press it.
Updates cannot happen on their own until this is on.
That is on purpose. Letting a website update itself with no way back is not something we are willing to do. Updates you start yourself still work without it.

About that "Updated by" switch.
Leave it on PureGPL unless you bought your own licence for that plugin directly from the people who made it. If you did, switch it to WordPress and we stay completely out of the way, exactly like the GP Premium row above.
Sometimes a row adds a small grey line like "Its own updater offers 4.2.4 too". That just means somebody else is offering the same plugin. Your choice still wins.

Two switches, and you need both.
The big switch here turns the whole thing on. Then, back on the Library tab, switch on Auto-update for each plugin you trust. A plugin only updates itself when both are on.
We ask twice on purpose. Your shop or your page builder is probably not something you want changing overnight without you.
How big an update may install itself
Version numbers have three parts, like 4.2.3. A change to the last number is small. A change to the first number is big. Pick how brave you want to be.

Only the last number changes, like 3.19.1 to 3.19.2. Almost always small fixes.

Restoring puts the files back. Anything a newer version changed in your database stays as it is.
Allow automatic repair
Leave this switched on. It is what makes a broken update fix itself.
If you switch it off, the plugin still e-mails you when something breaks, but it changes nothing. You would have to fix it yourself.
When repair is on but no saved copy exists, the plugin switches the faulty plugin off instead. A site missing one plugin is better than a site nobody can open.

Restore puts files back, not your database.
If a newer version changed something inside your database, that change stays. For most plugins this is fine. For anything holding orders or members, take a database backup before pressing Restore.

A plain diary of what the plugin has been doing, newest first. It answers "what happened last night".

The simplest way to use this plugin. You decide when, and you watch it happen.

Two e-mails always send.
The two about a plugin being put back after it broke your site are sent whatever your tick boxes say. That is not news anybody should be able to switch off.

Look for the small blue words via PureGPL at the end of the notice.
Those two words tell you where the update came from. When you see them, that update is ours. Clicking update now fetches our copy, with a saved copy taken first, exactly like the button in the Library.
Updates without those words come from somewhere else, and we leave them alone.
Nothing new to learn.

My Library is empty
Check the token was pasted in full, then press Check again now at the bottom of the Library tab.
Nothing updates on its own
Both switches must be on: the big one on Auto-updates, and Auto-update on each plugin's row in the Library. Then open the Logs tab — it writes down when it decided not to act, and why.
"Paused after a failure"
That plugin failed three times, so it is being left alone for a while. It tries again by itself: after an hour, then six hours, then a day.
"Its own updater is ahead"
Somebody else is offering a newer version than we have. We stand back so you do not lose out. Update it from your Plugins page instead.
"We leave this one alone"
That plugin's Updated by switch is set to WordPress. Click PureGPL on that row to take it back.
My site broke after an update
Check your e-mail first. It has almost certainly been put back already. If not, open the Safety tab and press Restore beside that plugin.
No e-mails arrive
Press Send a test on the Auto-updates tab. If that one does not arrive either, your website cannot send e-mail at all, and an SMTP plugin usually fixes it.
"Your plan is full"
You have connected as many websites as your plan allows. Disconnect one you no longer use, or move up a plan.
An update says it failed
Nothing was changed — a failed update leaves the old version in place. Check the Logs tab for the reason, then try again from the Library.
Still stuck?
Open the Logs tab, press Copy for support, and paste it into your message to us. It contains everything we would otherwise have to ask you for.

Questions people ask
The ones that come up most often.
Will it change anything without asking me?
Not until you tell it to. Out of the box it only shows you what is available. Updates happen on their own only after you switch on the main switch and the switch on each plugin's row.
What if an update breaks my website?
A copy of the plugin was saved before the update, and your site is opened straight afterwards to check it loads. If it does not, the copy goes back on its own and you get an e-mail. You do not need to be awake for any of it.
Does it slow my website down?
No. It checks once an hour in the background and remembers the answer. Your visitors never wait for it.
What information leaves my site?
Your website address, and the folder names and version numbers of the plugins installed here. Nothing else.
Can I use it on more than one website?
Yes. How many depends on your plan, and the banner at the top of the Library shows how many you have used. Every site uses the same token from Manage Websites.
I bought my own licence for one of these plugins. What now?
On that plugin's row, click WordPress in the Updated by column. We stop offering updates for it and stay completely out of the way, so your own licence keeps working normally.
How does the updater update itself?
The same way as any other plugin. When a new version comes out it appears on your Plugins page, and you update it there.
What happens if I delete the plugin?
Everything it created is tidied up: its settings, its saved copies, its safety file and its hourly check. Your plugins stay exactly as they are. Nothing of yours is uninstalled.
Why check every hour instead of once a day?
So a four-hour overnight window is actually met. Checking once a day would land inside that window once a day at best, and a missed slot would cost you a whole day with nothing said about it.
Does it work on a multisite network?
Yes. The settings live at network level and the hourly check runs once for the whole network, so your plugin folders are never updated twice at the same time.
