GPL licensing

This page explains, in plain language, what you get when you buy from PureGPL, what you do not get, and why. We would rather you read it and decide not to buy than buy and be disappointed.

What the GPL is

The GNU General Public License is a software licence used by WordPress itself and, by extension, by most WordPress themes and plugins. It gives everyone who receives a copy of the software four freedoms: to run it for any purpose, to study and modify it, to redistribute copies, and to distribute modified versions — as long as the same freedoms travel with every copy.

The GPL explicitly allows charging a fee for distributing a copy. GPLv2 Section 1 and GPLv3 Section 4 both say so. What it does not allow is restricting the freedoms of the person who receives the copy.

What you are actually paying for

You are not buying a software licence. The GPL already gave you that, for free, the moment you received the code.

You are paying PureGPL for a distribution service: for finding and maintaining the files, hosting them, scanning them for malware, tracking versions, packaging them, running the download infrastructure, and answering your questions when something goes wrong. That is a real service with real cost, and that is what your payment covers.

This distinction matters. It is why our price is a fraction of the original author’s, and it is also why you should not expect anything from the original author as a result of buying from us.

What is included

  • The complete product files, downloadable instantly from your account.
  • Updated versions of the files we hold, published to your account as and when we obtain them.
  • Installation, download and activation help from our support team.
  • Malware and integrity scanning before we publish a file.
  • Unlimited use on your own sites and your clients’ sites, as the GPL permits.
  • The full source code, unmodified and unobfuscated.

What is not included

Read this list carefully. Nothing here is a hidden term — it is the honest description of what an independent GPL distributor can and cannot provide.

  • No licence, account or subscription with the original author. Buying from us creates no relationship between you and them.
  • No official support. The original author will not answer your ticket, and asking them to may get your site flagged.
  • No automatic updates from the author’s servers. Updates come from us, on our schedule, not theirs.
  • No access to the author’s hosted services — cloud template libraries, demo importers that pull from their servers, AI features, font or stock-image libraries, APIs, or anything else that lives on their infrastructure rather than in the file.
  • No premium add-ons or extensions sold separately by the author, unless we list them separately.
  • No right to use the author’s trademarks or brand.
  • No guarantee that any product will continue to be available — see Section 9.

Activation, keys and updates

Some products check a licence against the original author’s servers before unlocking certain features.

We cannot give you access to another company’s servers or accounts. Where a product requires that kind of activation, any key, token or configuration note we supply exists only to let the GPL-licensed code run on your own installation. It gives you no entitlement, no warranty and no support claim against the original author, and the author may change or disable the mechanism at any time without notice to us or to you.

Updates work the same way: we publish new versions to your account when we obtain them. We do not promise same-day parity with the author’s releases, and we do not promise that a given product will keep receiving updates indefinitely.

Because all of this is disclosed to you before you buy, a change in an author’s activation or cloud service is not treated as a faulty product under our Refund Policy. A file that is corrupt, incomplete or will not install is, and we refund those.

What you may do with the files

Under the GPL you may generally:

  • install and use the product on as many websites as you like — yours and your clients’;
  • modify the source code however you wish;
  • use it commercially, in client work, and in products you sell;
  • redistribute it, modified or not, provided you comply with the GPL — which means passing on the same licence and making source available.

Separately, and as a condition of using our service, you must not share your PureGPL account credentials or your personal download links, and you must not scrape or bulk-download our catalogue. See Section 10 of our Terms of Service.

What the GPL does not cover

The GPL covers the code the author released under it. It does not grant you rights over:

  • trademarks — you may not pass a modified copy off under the original brand name;
  • bundled non-GPL assets — stock photos, icon sets, fonts, illustrations and demo content are frequently licensed separately and may not be redistributable;
  • hosted services and APIs;
  • components the author has deliberately licensed outside the GPL.

You are responsible for your own compliance with these when you use, modify or redistribute a product. If you plan to redistribute, check the licence headers in the files.

No affiliation

PureGPL is an independent distributor. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or connected to any of the developers, studios or companies whose products appear on our site, nor with WordPress®, the WordPress Foundation, Automattic Inc., WooCommerce®, WooCommerce Inc., Envato, Elementor, or any other third party named here.

Third-party names and marks appear on our site only to identify the software concerned. All trademarks belong to their owners. See our Copyright & Takedown Policy.

If you are a developer

If you created a product listed here and you want it gone, you do not need a lawyer and you do not need to argue with us.

Use the Report button on the product page, or email [email protected]. Once we have verified the request comes from you, we remove the product from our catalogue immediately, and always within 24 hours. We will confirm in writing when it is done. We do not require a court order and we do not make you chase us.

We also remove any product where we find non-GPL material has been bundled in, and any product whose licence status we cannot satisfy ourselves about.

When you should buy from the original author instead

We would rather tell you this up front than refund you later. Buy directly from the original author if:

    • you need official support, or a support SLA;
  • you need official activation, or the product’s cloud features, template library or API;
  • you need same-day security updates from the source;
  • you are building something where the vendor relationship matters — an enterprise project, a regulated environment, or anything where a procurement team will ask;
  • you want to support the developer’s continued work on the product.

PureGPL makes sense when you are testing, learning, prototyping, building on a tight budget, or running many sites where per-site licensing is not viable — and you are comfortable with everything on this page.

All products are supplied “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We scan files before publishing them, but we do not guarantee that any product is free of defects, compatible with your setup, or fit for any particular purpose.

Always take a full backup and test on a staging site before installing anything on a live website.

PureGPL is not liable for any damage to your website, hosting environment, database or data arising from installing or using a product. The full position is in Sections 18 and 19 of our Terms of Service. Nothing here limits any right you have under law that cannot be excluded.
